Benefis NICU turns 50, parents and nurses celebrate with a

In Elk’s Riverside Park, heaps of young ones operating all over and climbing on the playground machines is not an strange sight. It is the best place for family reunions.

On Saturday, June 25, a complete unique type of spouse and children bought alongside one another there to rejoice a milestone.

This year, the Benefis Wellbeing Process Neonatal Intense Care Device (NICU) turned 50, and Saturday’s get together was a testomony to the variety of individuals whose family members are a little larger many thanks to the health professionals and nurses who perform there.

Forty a long time and just one day

For 40 of the 50 a long time, the NICU has been open up, Marlene Lund was on its staff. She retired 8 yrs in the past but nevertheless remembers several of the toddlers she cared for.

Lund was originally employed for pediatrics and was questioned if she wanted to operate nights in the Intensive Care Nursery, as it was called then. She stated she didn’t know at initially what she was getting into, but it turned a labor of enjoy.

Lund calls the NICU a household, and NICU mom Paige Stewart agrees.

Stewart’s son Mason was in the NICU due to the fact she experienced a placental abruption and her blood combined with her baby’s. Mason also experienced his umbilical wire wrapped tightly all over his neck. Stewart stated the practical experience was terrifying, but the nurses had been a massive support.

“It was pretty much like my little one experienced other mothers seeking immediately after him there,” she explained. “They mothered him when I wasn’t ready to be there mainly because I had one more youngster.”
